Demystifying Bike Fit: Why an Hour With a Pro Is Worth It
The single change that fixes more sore necks, hands, and knees than any new bike ever will.
A great bike that does not fit you is worse than an okay bike that does. Fit changes everything.
The basics, in order
- Saddle height: leg almost-straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke
- Saddle fore/aft: kneecap over the pedal spindle when cranks are horizontal
- Reach: relaxed elbows, no neck strain
- Bar height: higher = comfort, lower = aero, adjust to your back, not anyone else's
Signs you need a fit
Numb hands, sore neck, knee pain, saddle discomfort that does not go away after the first 100 miles. None of those are "just part of riding". They are fit issues.
When to book
Right after buying a new bike. And again any time you change saddle, bars, or stem. We offer fit sessions in our service department.
Why fit matters
A bike that fits well feels comfortable, efficient, and easy to control. A bike that does not fit can cause sore knees, a stiff back, numb hands, and a general feeling that riding is just not fun. Many riders blame themselves when the real issue is fit. Small adjustments can make a big difference.
Frame size comes first
Choosing the right frame size is the foundation of a good fit. Manufacturers list size charts based on height, but proportions matter too. Two people of the same height can have different leg and arm lengths. Step-through frames make mounting easier, but you still need the right reach to the handlebars.
Saddle height
When the pedal is at the bottom of the stroke, your leg should be almost straight, with a slight bend at the knee. A saddle that is too low strains your knees; too high, and your hips rock side to side. For riders who want to put a foot down easily at stops, an upright or "flat foot" design can help.
Saddle position and angle
The saddle should be roughly level. Sliding it forward or back changes how your knees line up over the pedals and how far you reach to the handlebars. If you feel pressure or numbness, the saddle angle, position, or shape may need adjustment.
Handlebar reach and height
Your arms should have a slight bend, with relaxed shoulders. If you feel stretched out or cramped, the stem length or handlebar height may need changing. Raising the bars creates a more upright, comfortable position that is great for casual riding and commuting.
Common comfort fixes
- Numb hands: adjust handlebar height, try ergonomic grips, and check saddle tilt.
- Knee pain: check saddle height and fore-aft position.
- Lower back pain: raise the handlebars or shorten reach.
- Saddle soreness: try a different saddle shape and padded shorts.
- Neck and shoulder tension: bring the bars closer and higher.
E-bike specifics
E-bikes are heavier, so being able to put a foot down comfortably at stops matters more. Riders often spend more time on e-bikes and ride farther, so comfort over longer distances is important. Throttles and assist controls should be easy to reach without shifting your grip.
Fit when you buy
When you buy from us, we set up the bike for your body, including saddle height, handlebar position, and brake lever reach. After a few weeks of riding, use your free Basic Tune-Up within six months to fine-tune anything that still does not feel right.
Uncomfortable on your current bike? Bring it in and we will take a look. Often a few small changes are all it takes.
Small parts that make a big difference
- Saddles: different shapes and widths suit different riders and riding positions.
- Grips: ergonomic grips support your palms and reduce numbness.
- Stems: a shorter or taller stem changes reach and handlebar height.
- Handlebars: swept-back bars create a relaxed, upright position.
- Seat posts: suspension posts take the edge off bumps.
These parts are often inexpensive compared to the comfort they add, and we can help you choose and install them.
Fit changes over time
Your ideal fit can change as your fitness, flexibility, and riding habits change. A new injury, a longer commute, or simply riding more often can make a once-perfect setup feel off. If something starts to feel uncomfortable, do not just put up with it. A quick adjustment can often solve the problem. We are happy to check your fit whenever you bring your bike in for service, so you can keep riding comfortably for years.
