e-bike Theft Prevention: Locks, Habits, and Insurance
e-bikes are valuable. Here is how to keep yours.
A determined thief can steal almost any bike. Your job is to be a harder target than the bike next to yours.
Lock layers
- Primary: a quality U-lock (Kryptonite Evolution or similar) through the frame and rear wheel
- Secondary: a heavy chain or cable through the front wheel
- Keep the lock high off the ground, leverage attacks need leverage
Habits that matter
- Lock to immovable objects, not chain-link fences
- Bring the battery and display inside whenever possible
- Avoid leaving the bike overnight in public
- Register the serial number with Bike Index (free)
Insurance
Most homeowner and renter policies cover e-bike theft up to a limit, check yours. For high-value bikes, dedicated cycling policies (Velosurance, Sundays) are inexpensive peace of mind.
Why e-bikes are a target
E-bikes are valuable, easy to resell, and often parked in public places. That makes them attractive to thieves. The good news is that most theft is opportunistic. Thieves look for the easiest target, so a few smart habits can make your bike much less appealing than the one next to it.
Choosing the right lock
- U-locks: strong and hard to cut. Choose one sized to fit around your frame and a solid object with little extra space.
- Folding locks: nearly as strong as a U-lock and easier to carry and fit around thick objects.
- Heavy chains: very strong but heavy. Best for home or work storage.
- Cable locks: easy to cut. Use them only to secure wheels or seats along with a stronger lock.
Look for locks with a security rating from an independent tester, such as Sold Secure. In general, a heavier lock is harder to defeat.
How to lock it right
- Lock the frame, not just a wheel, to a solid, fixed object.
- Choose a rack or pole that cannot be lifted or unbolted.
- Keep the lock off the ground so it cannot be crushed or hammered easily.
- Use a second lock or cable for the front wheel.
- Take the battery and display with you when possible.
Where to park
Park in busy, well-lit areas with lots of foot traffic. Near a shop entrance or security camera is ideal. Avoid leaving the bike in the same spot every day, since thieves sometimes scout regular targets. At home, store the bike inside or in a locked garage, and do not leave it visible from the street.
Tracking and recovery
A GPS or Bluetooth tracker can help you find a stolen bike. Some e-bikes have built-in tracking, while others can use hidden trackers like an AirTag tucked inside the frame or under the seat. Trackers do not prevent theft, but they can help police recover your bike.
Record your bike
- Write down your bike's serial number, usually stamped under the bottom bracket.
- Take photos of the bike and any unique features.
- Register it with a free service such as Bike Index.
- Keep your receipt in a safe place for insurance and warranty claims.
Insurance
Check whether your homeowner's or renter's policy covers your e-bike, both at home and away from home. Some policies have low limits for bikes or exclude e-bikes entirely. If your coverage falls short, consider a dedicated bike insurance policy that covers theft and damage.
If your bike is stolen
Report the theft to police right away and give them your serial number and photos. Mark the bike as stolen on your registration service, post on local social media groups, and check resale sites. Let us know too. Local shops sometimes spot stolen bikes when they come in for service.

A layered approach
No lock is impossible to defeat. The goal is to make your bike take longer and look harder to steal than others nearby. Use a strong primary lock on the frame, a secondary lock or cable for the wheels, and remove the battery and any easily removable accessories. Combined with smart parking and a tracker, these layers make your bike a much less appealing target.
Locking at home
Many bikes are stolen from garages, patios, and apartment storage rooms. Lock your bike even at home, ideally to a wall or floor anchor. Keep the garage door closed, and avoid posting photos that show where your bike is stored.
The best protection is a habit. Lock your bike every time, even for a quick stop, and take the battery with you when you can. A thief only needs a minute, and a strong lock makes that minute much harder.
