Buying e-bikes for the Whole Family
Matching the right bike to every rider, kids, partners, grandparents, and you.
Family rides become wildly more fun when nobody is struggling to keep up. e-bikes are the great equalizer.
For partners with different fitness levels
Two e-bikes (one stronger assist for the slower rider, one lower assist for the stronger one) ride at the same speed effortlessly. End the "you ride too fast" arguments forever.
For older parents
Step-through frames, throttle on demand, and upright cruiser geometry get parents and grandparents back on bikes after years away.
For kids
Children under 15 should generally ride traditional bikes, the speed and weight of e-bikes are not designed for them. Pull them on a trail-a-bike or in a cargo seat instead.
Test as a family
Bring everyone. We will set up bikes for each rider and you can do a real ride together before deciding.
One family, different riders
Families rarely share the same height, fitness, or comfort level on a bike. That is exactly where e-bikes shine. Pedal assist evens out the differences, so a parent and teen, or two partners with very different fitness, can ride together comfortably without anyone being left behind or exhausted.
Matching bikes to riders
- The confident rider: a commuter or hybrid with a torque sensor and higher speed potential.
- The cautious rider: a step-through frame, lower top speed, and smooth, gentle assist.
- The comfort-first rider: an upright cruiser, such as an Electra, with a wide saddle and relaxed geometry.
- The hauler: a cargo or Sport Cargo bike for kids, picnics, and gear.
Older riders
For riders with joint pain, balance concerns, or limited strength, look for a low step-through frame, an upright riding position, and a lighter bike if possible. A bike that lets you put your feet flat on the ground at a stop, like Electra's Flat Foot designs, can make riding much more comfortable and confident. Throttles can help with starting from a stop.
Teens and kids
E-bike rules for young riders vary by city and by class. Arizona law limits certain uses of Class 3 bikes by riders under 16, and some cities and paths have their own age rules. Talk with teens about speed, traffic, and path courtesy before they ride. For younger kids, a cargo bike with a child seat or a kids' pedal bike may be a better fit than a full e-bike.
Budgeting for more than one bike
Buying two or more e-bikes is a big investment. A few ways to make it manageable:
- Affirm financing on bike purchases from $700 to $30,000, including 6 months at 0% APR for qualified buyers.
- Loyalty points on every dollar, which can go toward accessories and service.
- Choosing one feature-rich bike and one simpler model, based on who rides most.
- Buying helmets, locks, and lights together to cover everyone at once.
Family accessories
- Helmets for every rider, properly fitted.
- A rear rack and panniers for picnics and supplies.
- Bells and lights on every bike.
- A hitch-mounted rack rated for e-bike weight, if you will drive to trailheads.
Great family rides near Scottsdale
The Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is ideal for families, with smooth, mostly flat paths, parks, lakes, and plenty of places to stop. Short loops through Old Town are great for lunch and ice cream stops. Start with short rides and build up to longer ones as everyone gains confidence.
Test ride as a family
The best way to find the right bikes is for everyone to try them. Bring the family to the shop, and we will help each person find a bike that fits their size, comfort, and riding style. Book a test ride or stop by Tuesday through Saturday.
Safety habits for family rides
- Set a speed that is comfortable for the slowest rider.
- Have the most experienced rider lead and another adult bring up the rear.
- Practice hand signals and stopping together before riding near traffic.
- Carry water, snacks, and a basic repair kit.
- Plan rest stops at parks or shady spots.
Riding together is about fun, not speed. Keep the first few rides short and easy, and everyone will be eager for the next one.
Keeping everyone excited
The best family bikes are the ones everyone wants to ride. Let each person help choose their bike and accessories. Plan rides with a fun destination, such as a park, a lake, or an ice cream shop. Celebrate milestones, like the first ride to school or the first long loop. Over time, riding together can become one of your family's favorite ways to spend time outdoors.
