7 e-bike Service Myths That Cost Riders Money
Quick truths about brakes, batteries, chains, and the "annual tune-up."
A few persistent myths lead riders into bad decisions. Here are the ones we hear most.
Myth: e-bikes do not need tune-ups
They need them more than regular bikes. More weight + more speed = faster wear on brakes, chains, and tires.
Myth: WD-40 is fine for chains
It is not chain lube. It is a degreaser. Use bike-specific lube (wet or dry depending on your conditions).
Myth: Hydraulic brakes never need service
They need pad replacement just like mechanical brakes, and a fluid bleed every couple of years.
Myth: Storing the battery on the charger is fine
It shortens battery life. Charge to 80%, unplug.
Myth: Online tutorials replace a real mechanic
For tire changes and bolt checks, sure. For brake bleeds, motor diagnostics, or anything involving the battery management system, no. Bring it in.
Why these myths matter
Many e-bike problems we see in the shop could have been avoided with a little regular care. Some of the most common causes come from well-meaning advice that is just not true for e-bikes. Clearing up these myths can save you money, avoid breakdowns, and keep your bike safe.
Myth: More motor power means less wear
It is actually the opposite. Motor power adds force to your chain, cassette, and chainring every time you pedal. E-bike drivetrains often wear out faster than those on regular bikes. Check your chain for stretch regularly. Replacing a worn chain early protects more expensive parts.
Myth: Brakes are fine as long as they stop the bike
Brakes can slowly lose power as pads wear, and many riders do not notice until stopping distances are much longer. Heavier e-bikes put more strain on brakes, especially on long descents. Have pads checked regularly and replace them before they wear down to the metal backing, which can damage rotors.
Myth: You can ignore error codes if the bike still rides
An error code is the bike's way of telling you something is wrong. Ignoring it can turn a simple fix, like a loose connector or dirty contact, into a bigger and more expensive problem. Write the code down and check your manual, or bring it to us.
Myth: Washing with a hose is always fine
A gentle rinse is fine, but pressure washers can force water into bearings, motors, and electrical connections. Clean your bike with a bucket, soft brush, and mild soap. Remove the battery first, keep water away from the display and ports, and dry the bike afterward.
Myth: Any shop can work on any e-bike
E-bikes use different motor systems and electronics, and many require brand-specific diagnostic tools. A shop experienced with e-bikes can diagnose problems faster and handle warranty claims correctly. We service the brands we sell and many others; call ahead if you are not sure.
A simple service schedule
- Every ride: check tire pressure and brakes.
- Weekly: clean and lube the chain.
- Monthly: check bolts, brake pads, and tire condition.
- Every 6 to 12 months: professional tune-up.
- As needed: chain, brake pads, and tires based on wear.
What it costs to stay on top of service
Regular service is far cheaper than repairs from neglect. Our service menu lists packages and individual repairs with clear pricing, so you know what to expect before you book. If you bought your bike from us, you also get a free Basic Tune-Up within six months of purchase.

Myth: You only need service when something breaks
Waiting until something fails usually costs more. A worn chain left too long can ruin the cassette and chainring. Brake pads worn to the metal can damage rotors. A small wobble in a wheel can turn into broken spokes. Regular service catches these issues early, when fixes are quick and inexpensive.
Myth: New bikes do not need service for a year
New bikes need a check-up sooner than most people think. Cables stretch, bolts settle, and brakes and gears need small adjustments after the first few weeks of riding. That is why we include a free Basic Tune-Up within six months on every bike we sell. Bringing your bike in early keeps it running smoothly, catches small issues before they become big ones, and helps your bike stay safe and enjoyable for years.
