Riding Your e-bike in Winter, Rain, and Wind

Yes, you can ride year-round in Scottsdale, and almost anywhere else. Here is how to do it comfortably.

Modern e-bikes are weather-rated for normal conditions. The real challenge is keeping you comfortable.

    Rain

    • Most e-bikes are rated IPX4 or higher, fine in rain, not for submersion
    • Fenders are mandatory; full-coverage ones beat clip-ons
    • Wipe the chain dry after wet rides and re-lube

    Wind

Headwinds are where e-bikes shine. Bump up the assist a level, tuck low, and let the motor do the work. Crosswinds are the bigger danger, keep both hands on the bars and slow down on bridges.

    Cold

Lithium batteries lose range below 50°F. Store the battery indoors and only put it on the bike right before you ride. Layer your hands and ears. They take the brunt of wind chill.

Scottsdale weather: mostly perfect, sometimes tricky

Arizona offers some of the best year-round riding in the country. Our winters are mild, and most days are dry and sunny. But the Valley still has its challenges: cool winter mornings, sudden monsoon storms in summer, dust storms, and wind. A little preparation keeps you riding comfortably through all of them.

Monsoon season (roughly June through September)

Monsoon storms build quickly in the afternoon and can bring heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and dust. If a storm is rolling in, it is best to wait it out. Never ride through flooded washes or streets; the water is often deeper and faster than it looks, and Arizona's Stupid Motorist Law applies to more than cars. Many canal paths and greenbelts like the Indian Bend Wash are designed to flood during storms.

    Riding in the rain

    • Slow down and brake earlier; wet roads and painted lines are slippery.
    • Lower tire pressure slightly for more grip.
    • Avoid metal surfaces like grates and manhole covers.
    • Use lights, even during the day.
    • Fenders keep water and grit off you and the bike.

    Can e-bikes get wet?

Most e-bikes are built to handle rain and splashes. They are not designed to be submerged or sprayed with a pressure washer. After riding in the rain, wipe the bike down, dry the battery contacts, and re-lube the chain. If the bike sits wet, store it indoors so it can dry. If you ever ride through deep water, bring it in so we can check the electrical connections.

    Dust storms

Dust storms (haboobs) can reduce visibility to almost nothing in minutes. If you see one approaching, get off the road and find shelter. Dust is also hard on your chain and drivetrain; clean and lube the chain after riding in dusty conditions.

    Cool winter mornings

Winter mornings in Scottsdale can dip into the 30s and 40s, then warm up quickly by noon. Dress in layers: a light base layer, a windproof jacket, and full-finger gloves. Cold reduces battery range temporarily, so store and charge the battery indoors and install it just before you ride.

    Wind

Strong winds are common in spring and during storms. Gusts can push a bike sideways, especially one with a cargo load or a tall bag. Lower your speed, keep a firm grip, and avoid riding next to traffic during heavy gusts. Pedal assist makes headwinds manageable, but expect your range to drop.

    Gear that makes it easier

    • A lightweight rain jacket that packs small.
    • Waterproof panniers or a dry bag.
    • Clear or yellow glasses for low light and dust.
    • Reflective accents for gray, stormy days.

Need fenders, lights, or a quick check after a wet ride? Stop by the shop and we will get your bike ready for whatever the forecast brings.

After a wet or dusty ride

    • Wipe down the frame, battery, and display with a soft cloth.
    • Remove the battery and dry the contacts.
    • Clean and re-lube the chain.
    • Check brakes, since wet pads can wear faster.
    • Store the bike indoors to dry completely.

A few minutes of care after a storm keeps your bike running smoothly and prevents rust and electrical problems.

Know when to skip a ride

Sometimes the smartest choice is to wait. Lightning, flooded streets, heavy dust, and very strong winds are good reasons to stay home or take another way to get around. Check the forecast before you leave, especially during monsoon season, and have a backup plan. Storms in the Valley often pass quickly, so waiting an hour can mean a much safer ride. When conditions improve, you will be glad you waited, and your bike will be too.
